After skipping last year, it was so nice to have our family Chinese New Year celebration, albeit scaled-back, on Saturday night. We invited Mom and George and had our traditional menu: fresh veggies and peanut dip, dried fruit and nuts, homemade dumplings, takeout lo mein, grilled chicken, roasted broccoli and cauliflower, almond cookies, and ginger ice cream.
Sarah wore the last qipao dress from the stash we bought in China, and it was a little snug. We'll have to go shopping next year, if she still wants to wear one.
I asked her if it was okay for me to wear the one I have, or if that would be cultural appropriation. She rolled her eyes and said, "You obviously want to tell me what that means." Following my explanation, she said she didn't care either way. :)
Since it was a small crowd, we made the dumplings Saturday afternoon so we wouldn't have to freeze them. The pork ones were a little light on the meat (too much cabbage), but the veggie ones were yummy. Unfortunately, I'm the only one who eats those.
Sarah's school just started sending home COVID tests for the students to take once a week, so we tested her before Mom and George arrived -- our first home test. She passed with flying colors.
Although we missed the Huntleys, it was nice to have a bit of normalcy creep back into life. Next year, we hope to be back to a house-full!
