We modified our Chinese New Year celebration this year. Instead of a weekend gathering with extended family at our house, we opted for a mid-week dinner with just the three of us and dinner out, with a lion dance, with Mom and George the following weekend.
Despite Sarah having the flu, hence the mask, we made dumplings the weekend before. We had them with tofu noodle bowl on Tuesday, New Year's Eve.
On Sunday, we ate at Ginger Garden while enjoying the Hong Tinh Duong Lion Dancers from Springfield. They were a delight, such happy mayhem! I loved watching the young performers orchestrating the whole thing, yelling commands to the lions to guide them around and taking turns in the tail position, which requires bending over constantly. When the lions bat their eyes and wiggle their tails, it melts my heart. I also discovered my new favorite Chinese dish: walnut shrimp with coconut sauce. So yummy!
All in all, it was a festive welcome to the Year of the Snake ... a little light on family, but also light on stress.
