She was thrilled to get a pair of grips to use on the bars in gymnastics and to add a balance beam to her home gym (which moves between the basement and the front lawn, depending on the weather and insect activity). She also loved the glittery notecards from the Rodriguezes and the Apples to Apples game from Rachel and Matt.
For dinner, I made her favorite meal -- noodle bowl -- and we enjoyed chocolate cupcakes for dessert.
On Saturday, we hosted a birthday party for both Sarah and Grammy. It was a beautiful afternoon -- just right for sitting in the yard, which we so rarely do.
Don grilled burgers and brats, and we all squeezed in around the table to enjoy dinner and family stories, many of which centered on food. From George's struggles at the grocery store, to Kelley's stash of soup in his bedroom, to the impossible task of keeping food in the house with three teenage boys, there was a lot of laughter, which warmed my heart.
Her emotional skills have blossomed as well. She is more flexible than she used to be and moves through life with greater ease, ignoring bumps in the road that used to throw her off course. She seems happier, as if she's settling into herself and loosening her grip on the world. I see a spark of joy in her.
She and I are more in sync and less at odds these days. She expresses her thoughts and feelings and inquires about mine. She negotiates and compromises. We are working as a team.
Sarah becomes more remarkable all the time, and I love her more each day.
