Canadian Men and Buoys

Sarah and Don have gone to Canada by boat before and wanted to take me on a chilly afternoon over Memorial Day weekend. We set off on choppy waters, with threatening skies.

Half an hour later--after passing through the open railroad bridge and under the Swanton highway bridge--we arrived, expecting to see the big orange-and-white buoy with instructions in English on one side and French on the other. Instead, we found a smaller, yellow buoy with no lettering. Quelle deception.

Soon, however, we spotted a landing craft towing two big, orange-and-white buoys. We watched it approach the yellow buoy and motored over for a closer look.

It was a Canadian Coast Guard boat with three strapping young men aboard. I told them how disappointed I was to see the yellow buoy but that this was even better. Don asked them how things were in Canada. (Sarah tried to disappear.)

It took them just a few minutes to swap out the buoys and be on their way to the next point, no doubt talking about the goofy Americans they ran into.
