Closing Out Summer with Mom and George

Mom and George — and Ruby and Penny — joined us at the cabin for Labor Day weekend. The weather was beautiful, 70s and sunny.

Sarah and I took them to Hero's Welcome, the wonderful store in North Hero, and the farmers market in Grand Isle Saturday morning.

After a marathon retrieving session for the goldens and some relaxation in the yard for the humans, George and I treated Mom to a concert by the Vermont Philharmonic at Shore Acres. The music and scenery were inspiring!

Don had a fish fry ready to go for us when we returned, then we enjoyed a fire on the beach.

Sunday morning, Don insisted Mom go for a boat ride, despite her misgivings. I *think* she was happy she did.

After lunch, we drove up the west side of the Alburgh peninsula, through Alburgh, and over the bridge to Rouse's Point, New York. The bridge marks the point where the Richelieu River leaves Lake Champlain and heads north to the St. Lawrence Seaway. You can see Fort Montgomery, built from 1844-1871, on the New York shore as you cross. On the return trip, we detoured to Devyn's for creemees.

Don and George went fishing both mornings, and Sarah joined them in the evenings. Ruby and Penny were always eager for a boat ride. George caught some good-sized smallmouth bass Sunday morning.

Sunday evening, while Mom and I enjoyed the sunset from the cabin, the anglers went to "the big lake." They found walleye; George landed three and Sarah two.

It was a wonderful end to a challenging summer marked by Canadian wildfire smoke, heavy rains, yard flooding that caused septic issues, and lake levels that required constant adjustment of the dock and boat lift. We're hoping for an uneventful fall.
