Mid-Autumn Supermoon Festival

Last weekend was the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, a Chinese harvest feast that falls on the 15th day of the eighth month on the lunar calendar.  This year was extra special because it coincided with the supermoon and lunar eclipse.

We celebrated with CISCO, the Chinese Inter-regional Student Organization at Smith College.  Sarah enjoyed a complimentary dumpling and lo mein, and we each had a piece of moon cake (fortunately, one without a salted duck egg in the  middle).  CISCO put on a show of Chinese music, dancing, drama, and martial arts.  We all enjoyed it, but Sarah was particularly enthralled.  She idolizes these young women of her birth culture.

She was especially taken with a hip-hop dancer.  When the show was over, she asked me to tell the woman how much she liked her dance.  The woman was extremely gracious and asked to have her picture taken with Sarah.  Sarah, of course, was more than happy to oblige.

The supermoon and lunar eclipse happened the next night.  At sundown, Sarah and I drove to the one spot in town where we knew we'd have a good view.  After half an hour, a sliver of bright light appeared above the trees.  The moon rose quickly and soon shone intensely.

Later that night, Don and I watched the eclipse then headed to bed.  It was certainly a super moon weekend!
