Excelling in What Matters Most
Wednesday was the last day of school, and report cards were emailed to parents. Sarah always does well, but I was bowled over by her teacher's narrative:
Sarah is a very strong student in all academic areas. She is also kind, thoughtful, and considerate of other people. Sarah is well organized in her work and often puts in extra effort to make her projects exceptional. Sarah excels when working independently and is very self motivated. She is also an excellent partner or group member and can work successfully with anyone in the class. She has high standards for herself and her work. Sarah is a very strong reader who reads above grade level. She can read both fiction and nonfiction fluently with strong comprehension. She is also a great writer in many different genres. Her writing is clear and well structured. Sarah is a very confident math student. She understands new concepts quickly and applies previous learning to fifth grade topics. She is articulate in explaining her thinking in solving a problem. Sarah is curious and thoughtful. She asks good questions and is a critical thinker. Sarah has been a pleasure to have in class this year.
There's so much there to be proud of. This girl, who challenges me on many levels -- and has for nearly 10 years now -- is a remarkable person. I have no doubt she will do amazing things in life.
But my favorite part? She is also kind, thoughtful, and considerate of other people. Being smart is one thing, but treating people well is what counts in my book. That's my girl!
